For many years, the Old Guys have gathered in Daytona for the Thanksgiving weekend Daytona Turkey Run.
Hosted by the Daytona Beach Street Rods, this show draws in the area of 5000 show-quality vehicles, several thousand vendors, and hundreds of cars for sale in the Car Corral.
This year, we got together a day early, arriving Wednesday afternoon. The idea was to beat the crowds on Thursday, and get all our parts and equipoment shopping done early.
And then the cold front moved in, bringing the nighttime temps into the low 40's. Yeah, I know it's no big deal if you live in Michigan, but we're Florida guys, and 42 degrees is COLD for us!
Regardless, after some pizza for dinner Wednesday, we called it a night early, and first thing Thursday morning, we were in our assigned spaces at the Speedway.
An hour later, we walked the swap meet area, picking up most everything on our lists. Then it's typical car show...hang out, and chat with the gang. Same story on Thursday...early to bed...it was too cold to hang around outside, and back at the Speedway early Friday morning.
Friday dinner? We ordered pizza...again! Another early night, and back to the Speedway Saturday morning. Have you noticed a pattern developing?
By Saturday, we'd pretty much seen everything the Speedway had to offer, visited with lots of friends, made a couple new ones, and while Cecil checked all our door prize tickets, the rest of us returned to the hotel.
By Saturday afternoon, it had warmed up considerably, and after a Krystal Burger dinner, we spent the evening curbside, watching the never-ending stream of classics and street rods cruise the beach.
We even took some time out, and discussed our upcoming Route 66 trip. Actually, we added another day, so we can visit the world-famous Pomona Swap Meet as we head east from California.
If you've never been to Daytona over Thanksgiving, make it a priority for 2010. It makes for a perfect weekend, especially if you like pizza! |
