SSCC All-Cougar Show

A couple of the Old Guys have Cougar's (the four-wheel variety), but we're ALL members of the Sunshine State Cougar Club.

As we've done for years (more than we care to count), we've attended the Spring Daytona Beach show at the Speedway.

This year we planned the Missing Man formation (we sit at the bar, order his favorite beverage, and place it in front of an empty bar stool) for Packard Bill, who wouldn't be attending.

So at 10:00 Friday morning, it was no big surprise to hear from Packard Bill, telling me he was on the way to Daytona. The only thing that keeps an Old Guy from attending an official event is a funeral, and then only when it's their own!

We met up at lunchtime at the Speedway, which was slowly...VERY slowly...filling up with cars. From there, it was lunch at the local Steak 'N Shake (an Old Guys favorite), and then off to the hotel, where we began Happy Hour(s) a little early. The SSCC hosted a pizza party in the evening, and we managed to down a few slices!

Saturday morning, we convoyed to the Speedway, and immediately headed for the swap meet area. It seems the internet, the economy, and the lack of show cars on the field has taken its toll on the vendors...there weren't many at all, and that's sad, because it's always nice to see an item in person, rather than just a picture on the internet.

Saturday evening was a spaghetti dinner (great job, Cynthia and Bill) back at the hotel, followed by the awards, door and raffle prizes, and an extended cocktail hour that ended just a couple minutes shy of midnight!

The rain moved into the area in the middle of the night, bringing violent thunderstorms and heavy rain, and slowing down the ride home in the morning.

I don't know how the Speedway crew plans to deal with the declining number of show cars, but it's a cycle...fewer show cars cause fewer vendors to attend, and when fewer vendors attend, the number of show cars decreases.

It didn't affect the Cougar Club show...we can have fun ANYWHERE, and to say the least, we ALL did!

Billetproof Welcome Party

When the Old Guys say to be somewhere at a certain time, you can expect a couple of them will arrive a half-hour early! Being on time means you'll surely be the last one to arrive, and even though a couple of us arrived in Ocala twenty minutes early, we were...as usual...last!
A trip to Ocala wouldn't be complete without two stops...Steak 'N Shake, and National Parts Depot. As always, we visited both, and I picked up some much-needed parts for the new '68.
Then it was off to the hotel, where we parking lot swapped out the grille on my wagon. That would be the grille that the guy driving the Hummer backed into a couple months ago. The new grille looks great, and functions perfectly.
Last year, we went to the Nowhere Pub for the Billetproof Welcome Party. We went again this year, only earlier, and were among the first few to eat the five-dollar BBQ chicken, beans...double portion, please, and cole slaw dinner.
The parking lot was full, with nearly 100 very cool cars. Consider it a smapling of the BIG show at Don Garlits Museum on Saturday.
The Old Guys met the owner of Nowhere, and he said he's planning a monthly car show at the Pub. We might have to make that a future Old Guys Weekend!
It's morning now, and we're waiting for Rat Rod Steve to arrive. There's lots of cool cars in the hotel parking lot (including ours!)...a lot more than were here last year!
If the crowd at Nowhere last night, and the parking lot this morning are any indication, we're in for a GREAT show today!
We'll let you know this evening...
