Hooters Benefit Car Show - Melbourne

The Zachary Project is unique in that it provides assistance to firefighters and their families in their time of need, so when we found about the local Hooters in Melbourne hosting a benefit fundraiser, the Old Guys planned to attend.

We considered it a short trip, being less than a couple hundred miles each way, so we would drive to Melbourne in the morning, attend the show, and then spend the night.

The weather was perfect, as was the drive. There were nearly 100 cars on the show field, which the organizers considered a success, since this event was planned just a few weeks ago.

It's always good to attend a show, and see vehicles you've never seen before. This show was no exception...lots of very cool rides, and lots of really nice folks to hang out with!

Of course, we bought 50/50 tickets. Of course, we didn't win. And of course, later in the evening, we bought lottery tickets. And of course, as always (unless you count a three-number winner for a few dollars), we didn't win that, either!

On the way to the hotel, we stopped at the Andretti Thrill Park, after hearing there was a go-kart track there that was just the ticket for the Old Guys, who have raced on the longest go-kart track in the country (1-1/2 miles in Shepherdsville, Kentucky), and drove the most powerful production karts available, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Big disappointment! With the track so short, there is no straightaway long enough to get up to a decent speed, and that's just too much restraint required for the Old Guys!

So it was off to the hotel, a visit to the Early Bird at Golden Corral, and we spent the evening watching Florida spank Georgia! Life is good!

Daytona Turkey Run
Sorry for the delay in posting, but the Old Guys DO have priorities, and until now, this wasn't one of them! Here's the story about the Daytona Turkey Run:

Its become a tradition. Every Thanksgiving weekend, the Old Guys are at the Speedway in Daytona for the Turkey Run.

If you've never attended, we park amongst more than 5000 show-quality vehicles, wander through more than 4000 vendors, and check out about a thousand way-overpriced cars for (Thursday prices are always MUCH higher than Sunday prices) sale in the car corral.

When we're not walking around, we're hanging out by our cars, eating (and drinking) way too much because we think that out two-to-three mile walks each day will burn off those calories...wrong!

For many years, we stayed on the beach, with the rest of the gang. Five years ago, when the evening activities were moved to the Speedway (and the beach hotels had nearly priced themselves out of the market), we moved inland, too.

We found a very reasonable hotel just ten minutes from the Speedway, and set up camp there. Did I mention that it was just up the street from the local watering hole, where the Old Guys set up their evening camp.

This year was going to be different. We took twenty-five preferred parking spaces, and offered them to anyone interested in parking with us. We even offered to cook hot dogs and sausages for those that attended. All the spaces filled quickly...on paper, that is. During the weekend, many failed to show up. Oh well, more room and food for those who did!

Next year is going to be different, too, but in a better way. We've found a reasonable beachside (even more reasonable than where we've been staying) hotel, and have already started booking our rooms for 2009.

And we WON'T be involved in the preferred club parking...the Old Guys will be parking with another car club. And we WON'T be cooking Saturday lunch on the grill, either. That other club will be taking care of that, too!

Now all we've gotta do is find a watering hole beachside, unless Cecil already has. Who knows...we may never leave the beach! C'mon, Thanksgiving 2009!
