I just received word today from Rockin' Rich, longtime South Florida Oldies DJ, that the Crabby Jack's Cruise In he has hosted for just short of ten years has been permanently canceled.
That's too bad, because it was a Sunday evening event, and was the perfect place for everyone to cool down a little and unwind after a Sunday daytime event in the hot South Florida sunshine. Usually, the first topic of discussion amongst those in attendance was which show we would be attending the following weekend, and that was followed by what we would be having for dinner. Crabby Jack's itself, a Key West-style open air saloon serving great food (which Rich arranged to be discounted to cruisers), loved the cruisers, and that alone made the venue better. The cruisers themselves were well-behaved, kept the parking lot clean, and caused not one headache for the police. It was, according to most everyone attending, the perfect combination of ingredients for a really good cruise in. and they were right. Then, abruptly, about a year ago, the cruise in was canceled. The reason had nothing to do with Rockin' Rich, Crabby Jack's, or the cruisers, but rather was another business in the same shopping center constantly complaining. Rich dealt with those unjustified complaints, and several months later, the Crabby Jack's Cruise In was up and running...again! I don't know the details of this cancellation, but I know it potentially involves Rich and the center's attorneys, and we all know that once attorneys become involved, NO ONE wins! So Rich, ever the gracious host, has decided that rather than fight...again...it's easier to find another location, and I'll bet he's agressively seeking one as I write. Cruise In's come and go with regularity, and some will say this is just another victim. But that ISN'T the case here...Rich deserves better, Crabby Jack's deserves better, and most importantly, those who regularly supported this cruise in deserve better, too. And if I know Rich as well as I think I do, he may concede that he lost this battle, but I can promise you that when the smoke has finally cleared, that he will, on behalf of the cruisers, have won the war! EVENING UPDATE: As they say, 'the show must go on,' and today, Rich successfuly rearranged the Ft. Lauderdale Zo's cruise in schedule...the sporadic Saturday nights have been eliminated, and beginning next week, Zo's is an Every Sunday Evening Cruise In. Good job, Rich! |
