We headed out of Springfield just after 5:30 this morning, and the Old Guys agree there's no better way to travel the Interstate than early in the morning. The only problem is that it's much more difficult to pick out the cop cars!
We stopped for breakfast at a Cracker Barrel (where else?) about 7:30, and decided to put the tops down. The temperature was still in the low 50's, and the sun was shining. A couple miles down the road, the sun disappeared, and it didn't get any warmer. We ran our heater's for the next few hours.
At the next gas stop, Sonny suggested we try and find Interstate BBQ in Memphis. The GPS took care of that, and for a change, we didn't even have to go out of our way to get there.
The Old Guys are authorities when it comes to BBQ, and for years, considered Smokey Pig the best BBQ we've sampled.
On the Power Tour, we tried Sim's BBQ in Little Rock, and ranked it right beneath (or equal to) Smokey Pig.
But that was until today! We have a new ranking...Interstate is number one, Sims is number two, and Smokey Pig dropped to third place!
Interstate puts more meat on the bun than either of the others, it's more tender, and as a plus, puts cole slaw on the sandwich. Their BBQ sauce is by far the best, although their hot version is a bit more mild than Sim's We had baked beans, and they were better than both Smokey Pig and Sims. Overall, it was EXCELLENT!
The Interstate waitress said they were rated number two, behind the number one BBQ place in the country, which is somewhere in North Carolina. If that's the case, as good as Interstate was, we've GOTTA go to North Carolina.
Anyway, here we are in Tupelo. Cecil wants to go visit Elvis, who was born a couple miles from the hotel, but no one else is interested. So instead, he's gonna go to the hotel lobby, where they have a cardboard cut-out of him. If we catch him doin' that, look for a pic in the photo album!
Tomorrow, it's off to Tallahassee, with a stop on Strall's Mountain, which is Packard Bill's hometown. Please...don't ask! |
