The Eustis Weekend

The Old Guys were determined to get just one more show in before the end of the summer, and it was the perfect opportunity for Sonny and I to do a shake-down cruise with the convertibles before the Route 66 trip next month.

So it was off to Eustis, which would give us both a couple hundred miles of cruisin', as well as a great destination!

We arrived Friday afternoon, and...surprise, surprise...there's a Frogger's restaurant right next door to the hotel, and they just happen to have a bar!

We had burgers for lunch, and pizza for dinner. BOTH were done to perfection, and are highly recommended! The rain started at lunchtime, and continued through dinner, finally stopping sometime in the early AM.

Packard Bill arrived Saturday AM, as did Keith and Julie, and Cecil, and we arrived in Eustis well before 4:00 PM. Phil and Nancy were there, as were Rob and Dawn, and Ron Simmons...a serious Mercury gathering!

The show is downtown, and the streets are blocked for display cars. Not only did we spend the evening with good friends, we also saw lots of cars we've never seen before.

Of course, the rains eventually came, as the do almost every day in the summertime, and we decided to re-convene at Frogger's, where they were showing the UFC Chamionship fight on ALL their TV's.

Frogger's was packed...all the tables filled, and two-or-three deep at the bar! The fight was excellent. Couture methodically beat Gonzales to the ground, and we all noticed the announcer calling him an Old Guy several times.

Well, as REALLY Old Guys, we don't see Couture, who is 44, as REAL Old Guy, although in fighting age, he surely is, he WAS retired, and he IS a winner, so we've awarded him Old Guy status in our gang!

We're anxiously awaiting the end of September, when we cruise Route 66, and attend the Festival. And we hope to have a treat for y'all...Bill "Boss Hog" Strall III, live and uncensored from Springfield. Be sure to check back regularly!

Central Florida Weekend
Four of the Old Guys met at the Daytona Beach Farmer's Market and Swap Meet, quickly found the Hawaiian Shirt guy, and thinned out his inventory significantly!

We spent another couple hours wandering through the vendor maze, and buying some of those just had to have items!

Then we made a phone call to Tony at Crane Cams. He was in the office, and we were in Crane's parking lot about ten minutes later.

Tony gave us the FULL tour of Crane's plant, and it's safe to say when it comes to cams, lifters, rockers, and pushrods, we now know just about everything. And it was neat to see still-functioning machinery just about as old as us!

If you happen to be rebuilding your Ford engine, Tony's the guy to call for product recommendations...not only does he know Ford engines, he RACES them!

Friday evening, we attended the Casselberry cruise in, along with some Cougar Club friends, and 100+ cars. It was hot (as usual), but the A/C was blowing ice cold in Firehouse Subs, where we dined.

Saturday was the Winter Haven cruise in, which we, after a couple wrong turns, were forced to revert to the GPS to find! A group from the SSCC (we're members) joined us there, as did a couple hundred other cars. Surprise, Surprise...the local bar just happened to be just across from where we parked!

But the heat got to us early, and by 7:00 PM, we were heading back to the hotel. About 8:00 PM, we were in the hotel pool, and about 9:30, we were enjoying dessert in the Cracker Barrel next door.

Sunday morning, we headed for Webster, and the Car and Cycle Swap Meet. Webster was where we originally planned to go for the weekend, until the Old Guys added all the stops along the way. Regardless, it was a great early-morning ride...not exactly cool out, but not hot (yet).

The Webster Car and Cycle Swap Meet should remove the "CAR" part from the name of the event, since there were maybe 200 vendors, and about 175 of them dealt in Harley parts, and another 20 were not even auto-related.

By 10:30 AM, the heat index was over 100...it was way too hot for us! Ten minutes later, we all headed for our respective homes.

We were looking for a laid-back weekend, and this was anything but! Power steering hoses got replaced, as did ignition controllers and power valves. And we almost had to do a brake job on the wagon!

We all agreed that both July and August are way too hot for Florida car shows. But at the same time, we also agreed to meet in Eustis in a couple weeks, for an evening cruise in. We don't think it can possibly be any hotter than it was this weekend!
