| Hot Rod Power Tour - Day Two |

After a really good night's sleep, we were on Main Street in Mayberry RFD at 7:30 AM. We took a couple pics, but all the parking in front of Floyd's Barber Shop was taken. What's an Old Guy to do, but double park, take the pics, and hope that Andy didn't give us a ticket! We had breakfast at Slappy's, right next door to Floyd's. A complete breakfast...an egg, bacon, biscuit, gravy, and more...was $2.60. We went for TWO eggs, which was another twenty cents! Then it was northbound for an uneventful ride to Cleveland. The trip through the mountains was awesome, but the rest of the ride was boring, and no fun. Why, you ask? Well, we used the GPS, and never got lost! That definitely took the fun out of the ride! Sonny's Stereo Gremlin is still acting up, and he figures he can fix it for about $75. He's gonna buy a new radio at Wally World! We stopped for gas, and decided to have lunch at Pizza Hut. We pulled into the parking lot, and lo and behold, there was a White Castle right next door. Where we decided to go was a no-brainer...the Sliders were excellent! Sonny said it doesn't qualify as fast food because we had to wait while they cookem them! Now we're here in Cleveland, and will be here until Sunday morning. Tomorrow, sometime after noon, registration opens, and we'll be there. And tomorrow afternoon, we're going to the Flaming River Cruise In. We gotta run now...this is interfeering with Happy Hour! More tomorrow. |
| Hot Rod Power Tour - Day One |
Yesterday, three of the Old Guys gathered in Jacksonville, and spent the night at Chez Dolezel. After a couple hours cleaning Love Bugs from the cars, we had lunch and dinner combined, then it was off to Turffles for dessert. If you don't know about Truffles, just ask. The fourth Old Guy spent the night in Ormond Beach...go figure.
Today, we headed north. Cecil managed to meet us on time...about 4:45 AM!
Breakfast at the Cracker Barrel, of course, and Sonny messed with the cause of his stereo gremlin...the same one I had a couple years ago!
We stopped at Holman and Moody in Charlotte, and you've gotta see the pics to do it justice! Lee Holman gave us a tour of the facility, some of the GT40 racing background, and then showed us his 1964 Fairlane Trans Am car...don't confuse it with a Thunderbolt...this one's made for beating Enzo Ferrari's, and it DOES!
After a couple hours there, we headed north again, only to find a major interstate traffic backup! Getting off the interstate was the solution, and after a fuel stop, we returned to clear sailing.
So we're stting in Mt. Airy, about a mile from Floyd's Barber Shop, and it's time for dinner. Afterwards, it'll be cocktail hour(s), and maybe we'll end up spending the night with Otis in the Mayberry Lock Up!
Five hundred-plus miles for the Old Guys today. Tomorrow will be about a hundred less. |
| Beach Blast XIII |
One of the Old Guys' favorite car shows is the Beach Blast, which is hosted by Mike Kelly's Cruise News, and held at the oceanfront Holiday Inn.
There's a 200-vehicle pre-registration limit , and every year, that limit is quickly reached. Many participants, including us, make a weekend out of it.
The show is actually held on Sunday. Last year, we arrived mid-afternoon Friday, and the show field was about a quarter-full.
Yesterday, when we arrived, after spending more than an hour ridding our cars of Love Bugs, we found the show field about 85% full! Next year, it'll probably fill up sometime on Thursday!
The Old Guys, along with most of the other participants, immediately went into Cocktail Hour mode, and somehwere about 11:00 last night, as the crowd thinned out, we called it an evening.
Saturday: Still a day away from showtime, but you'd never know it. About noontime, fifty cars moved onto the Promenade, making room for fifty more in the parking lot. We managed to park our seven Cougars together in the same area, although not in a row.
About 1:30, the Old Guys hosted a cookout on the balcony of the Cabana Room, featuring Sloppy Joe's, and hot dogs on the grill. There was more than enough food, and we'll finish it for lunch tomorrow.
In the evening, it was back to the parking lot, where we were determined to be the last to leave, and at about 1:00 AM, we WERE the last group there, and we called it a night.
Tomorrow's the big show, and we need our rest!
Sunday: After a late start, we spent some time (actually, very little time) cleaning the cars, and suddenly it was lunchtime, which was a repeat of yesterday.
At 3:00, the door prizes were given out (of course, we got none), and the awards were presented (we got none of them, either). The just-short-of-$1000 50/50 drawing was held, and our numbers, as always, weren't even close.
Now, it's nap time for the Old Guys, because there's another party this evening! It'll be good to get back home, where we'll finally get some rest! |
| Two MUST HAVE Tools |
The rules are simple, and relatively easy to remember...
- If it moves, and it's not supposed to, use some duct tape.
- If it DOESN'T move, and it's supposed to, use some WD-40.
The Old Guys suggest you keep BOTH handy in the trunk of your car! |
